Lying was the start of my opportunities to drink. I thought why not, I’ll have a drink. I was thinking at the time this would take all the pain away. Drinking became my friend, a way out. Now I wonder if this was why my dad drank. Was frequent alcohol consumption his way out from whatever pain he felt? As I got older I began to understand some things about my dad and his drinking habits. He was a police officer until he became disabled from having a hip surgery, and then a heart attack at the age of thirty. He took Tylenol #3 all the time for his constant pain. These things seemed like enough to make anyone want to drink! Looking back I realize that alcohol was not the problem. Alcohol used responsibly in moderation is not the issue. The problem comes with the choice to abuse alcohol. The choice to drink irresponsibility affects the entire family unit. It has affected me in that I have had difficulties with forming abusive relationships, low self -esteem, and I have control issues. That is why I choose to drink responsibly. |
