The Skinny Of It All

Eating disorders typically affects those that have an “appearance oriented professions, such as modeling, entertainment and sports.”(30 Nov 1995) Models being the most affected with the majority being 98% thinner than most Americans(Health) These are the same people on the covers magazines, and on television, advertising the idea of thin is beautiful.

This is some very disturbing news. What causes people to take such extreme measures?  Much of the research has pointed to self-image and self-esteem.  Many people with anorexia and bulimia have “low self esteem and a cruel perfectionism that allow them no flaws in appearance or performance of any activity undertaken.” (14 Apr 2000)  They feel the need to be perfect during adolescents this could be the reason there are more girls with eating disorders. According to Montana Katz, a research scholar at Wellesley College Center for Research on Women during puberty “a girl’s esteem has been shown to drop during puberty making her more vulnerable.”   In Australia during interviews conducted on young adolescent girls by Dr. Eleanor Wertheim found, “that different media had an influence on body image. Seeing thin models in ads, on TV and magazines made them feel they weren’t good enough, pretty enough, or thin enough. What can be done to help prevent this from happening? In fact the media is so powerful that on the small island of Fiji prior to 1995. There had been no reports of bulimia reported among high school girls according to Dr. Anne Becker. However after the introduction of television during a 3 year study she reported that bulimia had  jumped up by “11%, and girls living with a television set were more than 3 times likely for developing unhealthy weight control behaviors.”  Is this the smoking gun?
