q Incredibly, unexplainable events carry this generation into a new realm of discovery. Television sets today fill living spaces with a countless number of people being featured in real life shows about their experiences with the paranormal, like Haunted Places, Celebrity Ghost Stories, and Psychic Kids just to name a few. Although researchers spend numerous hours attempting to prove paranormal activity in various places they spend just as much time attempting to prove that these experiences are scientifically explainable. Skepticism is one of the biggest assets researcher’s posses when it comes to proving or disproving such activity. Lead investigator for Southern Colorado Paranormal Researchers, Roger White had been a lifelong skeptic about anything ghost related but became interested the possibility of paranormal activity after he had a personal experience. “Paranormal activity is rare. The human mind is capable of making things up,” says White (qtd. in Facts or Phantoms 70). That’s one reason White and his team remains difficult to convince. Contrary to popular belief investigations into the paranormal is not a brand new practice. In fact in 1882 three scholars formed the first serious investigatory body of British Society for Psychical Research (70). This trio while conducting scientific testing also remained skeptical while in the process.
Although our generation brings in stories from the events that have happened in our time we also have stories from events that happened many years ago that still haunt our world today. David Sircom, founder of Massachusetts Paranormal Institute has been investigating the two-hundred year old Hyannis Public Library. It is said to be haunted by a librarian who worked there until she died from 1909 until 1943. David and his team use methods that are similar to the ones used in popular television shows such as, “Ghost Hunters, Paranormal State and Ghost Lab”. Like other ghost hunters of our times the (MPI) uses new age equipment to record, research and document activities in alleged haunted places. |
